The White Bear

  Background

The White Bear was built in the 15th and 16th century with a 1970's rear extension. The building is old and costly to maintain. We are a grade II Listed Building, in the Green Belt and in an area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. These designations comprise a host of planning and other restrictions which prevent us from modernising, expanding or developing the pub.

  Inside the Pub

The interior of The White Bear is divided into a number of small rooms, each seating around twenty-five guests; in total the pub can seat around one hundred and sixty diners.

There are three open fireplaces, perfect for those cold winter evenings.

See if you can find the inscriptions carved into two of our wooden beams/posts by two workers from the 16th and 18th century.

  Outside the Pub

During the warmer days, our garden is perfect to wile away a few lazy hours in the sun. There is a tranquil pond and plenty of benches and tables dotted around.

When the temperature is right we offer a sandwich and light menu prepared in our quaint outside cooking facilty.

We have a large non-smoking patio area with an attractive covered gazebo providing for either private or shared dining on large wooden tables. The outside seating area provides for two hundred and forty and extends around the entire pub.

  Parking

Our car park can accomodate around one hundred and twenty cars and has dedicated spaces for those less able.

We have the facility to secure up to eight bicycles in each of our front and rear car parks.

  Facilities for the less able

There are a number of dedicated car parking spaces in the front car park. In addition to the steps, there is wheel chair access to the pub via a sloped section of pathway. There are always willing staff on hand to help.

  Functions

Due to the lay out of the pub, we are normally unable to accommodate parties over twenty five. However, on occasion we may be able cater for larger parties. Please call or email to discuss your requirements.

  Environment & Community

  1. We use low energy electric lights wherever we can.
  2. We have installed energy flow meters with a view to reducing our electricity consumption.
  3. We recycle all our glass bottles.
  4. We are recycling rain water from our roof to an underground tank from where it is pumped out when needed to water the garden.
  5. All our roof spaces are insulated above the recommended levels.
  6. We have planted native wild flowers around the boundary to the rear car park which in time will encourage indigenous wildlife.
  7. We support the local church at St Lenard's and the local annual Pony Club and Horse Show.
  8. We have started to buy garden furniture made from re-cycled material.
  9. We have dedicated parking facilities for bicycles.

  Public Transport

There is no public transport serving The White Bear

On the 14th May 1958, Bus Route 400 was introduced as a limited service running on Sundays only between New Addington and Warlingham Park Hospital via Fickleshole. The route had the misfortune to be scheduled to start operation in the midst of the 1958 bus strike. It ran on only 17 occasions before being withdrawn after Sunday 12th October.
