Standing proudly outside the front door of the public house is our resident "White Bear". The original Bear was acquired in 1905, via auction, from The Bear pub at the Criterion, Piccadily, starting point of the Bath coach.
During World War Two the Bear disappeared in the hands of reveling Canadian troops from the West Nova Scotia Regiment, stationed at the time in Woldingham. To this day, it has never been found! Perhaps a veteran in Canada can recall where it is buried, for surely they didn't take it home.
The present bear is a very solid and immovable concrete job. During the general elections in the late 1960's /early 1970's various wags at different times painted the bear both blue and red so that sometimes the locals would refer to the pub as "The Coloured Animal". |
